Julie McCue
Biography
Julie retired and moved from Minnesota to the North Kohala area in 1994. Shortly after becoming settled, she decided to try painting as a creative outlet. She chose watercolor because of the simplicity of the medium - you only need paper, paint and water. Strictly self-taught, she studied books, magazines, and the artwork of other local artists, working to develop a style of her own.
"While I had always considered watercolors a little boring in the past, I began to notice that the paintings I was seeing now were bright and exciting to look at.. the methods seemed to have changed. I enjoy strong colors, and the way they blend together in watercolor is unpredictable and fun to watch - you couldn't plan it to look that way."
"I love flowers, so painting florals seemed a natural, and the flowers found in Hawaii are unique and fun to paint. I like to concentrate on a close up view, sometimes mixing geometric patterns with the organic look of the flower for contrast, and often finishing up by splattering paint over the background or the whole design as a way of tying colors together and creating a more spontaneous look for the piece."
