Mary Katherine Chandler
Biography
I grew up in central Massachusetts on the family apple farm. I married young and had three children in short order. We moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1969, where i became a Montessori teacher. I developed art programs for schools as well as having my own classroom for many years.
I studied printmaking, sculpture and painting off and on, while evolving fiber arts on my own.
The stitcheries began while taking care of my elderly father, as busy hand work during the long hours of two winters on the coast of Maine. For some all these stitches and beads might be cause for madness. For me it's effortlessness and grounding. It's like drawing with thread. I never really know how they'll end up, but am usually rewarded. The boxes are a Montessori craft project taken to the next level. I'm beginning to see Hawaiian themes and colors in the new pieces. Hopefully I'll continue as long as life and eyesight allows, then I'll dictate my memories and embroidery with words.
